Navigating the Hidden Challenges of International Relocation: The Importance of Humanized Support

Atualizado: 4 de out. de 2023

Moving abroad can be an exhilarating adventure filled with new experiences and opportunities. However, studies have shown that a significant number of expats—40% to be exact—end up facing difficulties and fail in their relocation journey (source: Insead R&D: Towards the Boundarlyless Career). Among the various reasons for this failure, a staggering 70% can be attributed to the challenges that families encounter during the international move. In many cases, what is lacking in traditional expat packages is the human aspect—the personalized support that acknowledges the emotional and psychological toll of such a significant life transition. Drawing from personal experience, I understand the impact of moving without humanized support and the toll it can take on our well-being.

The Illusion of Perfection:

In today's social media-driven world, living abroad often seems like a dream come true. Pictures of exotic destinations, family trips, and gatherings with friends paint an idyllic picture of expat life. However, behind those picture-perfect moments lies a reality that is often overlooked.Don’t get me wrong. I highly recommend an expat experience, however, preparing for this adjustment, will make it a lot more positive and sustainable for everyone involved!

The Rollercoaster of Relocation:

When my husband and I relocated to Paris with two toddlers amidst a global pandemic, the initial reaction from friends was filled with admiration and envy. However, the reality we faced was far from glamorous. Arriving in the middle of a heatwave, with no air conditioning, I found myself sweating while mopping the kitchen floor at 11 pm. The challenges I encountered in those first few months were eye-opening:

  1. Underestimating the Complexity: Despite having lived in multiple cities before, I had not anticipated the unique difficulties of moving with two young children during a pandemic. The logistical and emotional demands were far greater than I had imagined.

  2. The Need for Support: Neglecting the importance of a support network to assist with household tasks and childcare added an additional layer of stress. I realized that relying solely on my own capabilities was not sustainable.

  3. Language Barriers and Education: Not being prepared to support my son in a bilingual school, where English and French were the primary languages, was a significant challenge. Communication barriers hindered my ability to actively participate in his education and understand his progress.

  4. Personal and Professional Neglect: Neglecting my personal and professional goals was another aspect that took a toll on my overall well-being. Without a sense of purpose and direction, I felt adrift and unfulfilled.

  5. Financial Pressures: The shift from a double income to a single income had a profound impact not only on our bank account but also on the dynamics within our family. We had grown accustomed to the contributions of both partners, and suddenly relying on a single income added a great amount of pressure to ensure the success of this international assignment.

  6. The Invisible Strain: The daily exhaustion and the feeling of not accomplishing anything left me drained. The invisible strain of navigating a new environment and managing the demands of daily life took a significant toll on my physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

The Importance of Humanized Support:

Through my own expat journey, I came to a profound realization—the absence of humanized support. Despite considering myself an "experienced" expat, I discovered that each relocation presents its own set of challenges, influenced by personal circumstances and the ever-changing seasons of life. It became clear that acknowledging the emotional impact and equipping individuals with the essential tools and resources to navigate these challenges is vital for a successful and fulfilling transition.

Moving abroad is an extraordinary opportunity for personal growth and new adventures. However, it is essential to acknowledge the hidden challenges that often go unnoticed. By embracing the concept of humanized support, we can create a nurturing environment tha t addresses the emotional, physical, and psychological needs of expats. Let us strive to redefine the expat experience by fostering a culture of empathy, understanding, and personalized support. Together, we can empower individuals and families to thrive during their international relocation journeys, ensuring a smoother transition anda greater sense of fulfillment in their new homes.
